Post Register: Todd Achilles Relishes His Independent Senate Run Against Jim Risch

More than 50 Idaho Falls residents packed the Elks Lodge to meet the Army tank commander turned Senate candidate.

The Idaho Falls Post Register covered Todd Achilles’ campaign stop in eastern Idaho, where more than 50 residents came to the local Elks Lodge to hear from the independent U.S. Senate candidate and ask him questions directly. That’s more direct public engagement in one evening than Idahoans have gotten from the incumbent in years — the Post Register notes Sen. Jim Risch has not issued a direct personal response to Achilles’ challenge, and a debate looks unlikely.

The paper’s reporting covers Achilles’ case against Washington’s status quo, including his warning about what federal Medicaid cuts mean for a state where the majority of hospitals are small and rural, barely keeping their doors open. It also captures the generational contrast in the race: Achilles, 58, a Gulf War tank commander, professor, and former legislator, versus an 82-year-old three-term incumbent.

Todd Achilles is an IVA-endorsed independent veteran, and he leads the way he learned in the Army: by example, and by showing up. Idaho hasn’t had a real Senate race in a generation. It has one now.
