Two IVA-Endorsed Independents Win Their Primaries in Eastern Washington

Eastern Washington primaries early results: Danny Tarkenton and Ronald McCoy advancing to November; Aaron Croft still in the fight; Nate Powell first run, strong showing

Spokane County voted on August 4 with three wildfires still burning and none of them contained — roughly 65,000 people under evacuation orders, hundreds of homes gone, and the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center closed with its campus inside the evacuation zone. 77,176 ballots came in anyway, a turnout of 20.56%.

Four IVA-endorsed independent veterans were on that ballot, and in Washington’s top-two primary only the two highest finishers in each race advance. Two of them won a spot on the November ballot.

Danny Tarkenton advances in the race for Spokane County Prosecuting Attorney with 35,583 votes (49.01%), running with no party label at all — her ballot line reads “States No Party Preference.” Ronald McCoy advances in Legislative District 7’s State Senate race, finishing second in a four-way field with 6,191 votes (27.71%) district-wide.

Aaron Croft sits third in Legislative District 6’s State House Position 2 race with 4,531 votes (22.91%) — just 537 votes out of second place, with ballots still being counted. Nate Powell finished third in a twelve-candidate field for Washington’s 5th Congressional District, drawing 16,216 votes (14.35%) district-wide in his first run for Congress.

All results are unofficial. Washington counts ballots for two more weeks — Spokane County certifies on August 18 and the Secretary of State on August 21. Congressional and legislative totals above are district-wide; the prosecuting attorney and LD-6 races are Spokane County. See the full breakdown →
